A Senate committee tabled a bill that would have taken aways drivers licenses from illegal immigrants on Thursday morning. The Senate Public Affairs Committee voted 4-2 on a party line vote to table the legislation. Similar legislation is currently the topic of much discussion in the House.
The Republicans on the Senate side, perhaps with one eye on the debate going on in the House, said the tabling isn’t the end of the bill in their body.
“Even though Senate Public Affairs tabled this critical bill, it is not the end of this,” Sen. John Ryan, R-Albuquerque, said in a statement following the vote. “I am hopeful there will be additional debates, additional consideration and additional votes on this issue that is supported by 72 percent of New Mexicans who want to make New Mexico safer.”
Two Republican senators and a Democrat were not present for the vote.
This casts doubt on whether, even if the bill passes the House, that it would be able to clear the Senate and make its way to Gov. Susana Martinez’s desk.
Repealing driver’s licenses for illegal immigrants has been a priority of Martinez.
