Wilson reportedly entering Senate race on Monday

By | 03.04.11 | 7:28 am

Two media sources are reporting that former U.S. Rep. Heather Wilson is going to enter the U.S. Senate race next week. This would be Wilson’s second Senate run.

Politico first reported that Wilson will announce she is entering the Senate race on Monday, citing two Republican sources. NMPolitics.net confirmed the report, citing its own source who has “knowledge of the situation.”

Wilson’s entrance into the race would give the Republican Party a top-tier candidate for a seat to be vacated by U.S. Sen.Jeff Bingaman who announced his retirement on February 18. Bingaman has served as a U.S. Senator since 1983.

In 2008, Wilson lost in the Republican primary against Steve Pearce. Pearce, who once again became U.S. Rep. in 2010, is reportedly considering a run at the Senate as well. He sent an open letter to Republicans urging them not to be “hasty” in selecting a candidate.

Pearce is considered more conservative than Wilson and narrowly defeated her in the 2008 Republican primary.

So far two lesser-known Republicans, former congressional candidate Greg Sowards and activist William S. English, have entered the Republican race.

No Democrats have declared their intention to run. However, U.S. Rep. Martin Heinrich, who replaced Wilson in Congress in the 1st Congressional District, said he is actively considering a Senate run. State Auditor Hector Balderas said he is “seriously considering” a run to replace Bingaman.
