Former State Representative and Republican gubernatorial candidate
Janice Arnold-Jones has formed an exploratory committee for a possible run for the 1st Congressional District seat. Rep. Martin Heinrich, who now represents the district, is considering a run for the U.S. Senate seat that will be vacated by Jeff Bingaman in 2012.
Arnold-Jones’ announcement is the latest of the dominoes that have fallen since Bingaman announced his impending retirement.
“Since the announcement by Senator Jeff Bingaman that he will retire at the end of his term I’ve received numerous telephone calls and emails asking me to run for several different offices,” Arnold-Jones said in a statement. “The majority of these calls have been supporters asking me to step forward and run for Congress. Forming an exploratory committee is the first step in a possible run.”
Arnold-Jones said that Heinrich’s possible interest in the Senate seat has “definitely helped lead to the formation of this exploratory committee.”
“At this time I am not a candidate for office. I am testing the waters,” Arnold-Jones added. “The two biggest things that must be tested are whether or not we can raise the financial resources necessary and how much support can be generated.”
Arnold-Jones previously ran for governor but lost in the 2010 Republican primary to current governor Susana Martinez.
Heinrich was first elected in 2008. Heinrich was the first Democrat to hold the 1st Congressional District seat.
