U.S. Rep. Martin Heinrich, D-N.M., will decide whether to run for U.S. Senate soon — perhaps as early as this weekend, according to the Albuquerque Journal.
The second-term freshman congressman from Albuquerque would be the first top-tier Democrat to announce his intention to run for Senate.

A source with information about Heinrich’s intentions said the congressman has been weighing the decision for weeks and an announcement is imminent. The source would not confirm if Heinrich intends to run, but stressed his qualifications as a “tried and tested” politician with proven fundraising ability in two tough elections.
Heinrich has twice won re-election in New Mexico’s 1st Congressional District, considered New Mexico’s “swing district,.”
Heinrich became the first Democrat to ever hold the seat. Heinrich ran for the open seat after Heather Wilson opted for a 2008 run for Senate where she lost in the Republican primary to Steve Pearce.
Wilson announced she will run for Senate again. So for no other top tier Republicans have announced their candidacy, though businessman Greg Sowards and columnist Bill English have both announced their intention to run.
Albuquerque political activist Andres Valdez is the lone announced Democratic candidate, but he is not considered a top-tier contender for the seat.
