Wilson raises $300K, Sowards will report $150K

Senatorial candidate Heather Wilson announced Monday that she raised $300,000 between the time she announced her candidacy on Mar. 7 and the end of the fundraising quarter at midnight on April 1. Wilson will report having $281,000 cash on hand at the filing deadline.

One of Wilson’s Republican primary opponents, Greg Sowards, told Politico that he will report having more than $150,000 cash on hand. The money Sowards raised will include a personal loan.

“New Mexicans are tired of government in Washington spending money we don’t have,” Wilson said in a statement. “I am honored that so many New Mexicans have been willing to support my candidacy this early and help me bring a new quality of leadership to the United States Senate.”

Wilson is considered the only top-tier Republican candidate currently in the U.S. Senate race. Lt. Gov. John Sanchez and U.S. Rep. Steve Pearce are also both reportedly considering runs at the U.S. Senate seat left open after current U.S. Senator Jeff Bingaman announced he would not seek a sixth term.

U.S. Rep. Martin Heinrich is a top-tier candidate on the Democratic side. He announced after the filing deadline but had over $50,000 cash on hand in his U.S. House campaign war-chest as of the start of the year. Heinrich can transfer the funds to his Senate campaign.
