Sunland Park mayor reportedly considering challenge to Pearce

Sunland Park mayor David Resendiz is reportedly set to enter the 2nd Congressional District race as a Democrat, according to reports from Capitol Report New Mexico and the Las Cruces Sun-News. Resendiz would be the first Democrat to enter the race.

Capitol Report New Mexico reported Saturday that Resendiz told delegates at the Democratic Party of New Mexico state convention of his intention to run.

“I feel the public’s been neglected,” Resendiz told the conservative website.

The Sun-News was unable to contact Resendiz, but there are indications that an announcement is in the works.

Resendiz, who recently attended a mayors conference in Chicago, did not return phone messages about the online report.

Sunland Park officials said the mayor might announce his plans concerning the 2012 election at a news conference in the near future.

At the National Mayors Summit, Resendiz spoke with Richard M. Daley, the mayor of Chicago, “about border security, trade and economic development.”

The seat is currently held by Steve Pearce, a Republican.
