Heather Wilson’s Senate campaign released a statement Tuesday from state Sen. Clint Harden, R-Clovis, who says Lt. Gov. John Sanchez should resign from his position if he wants to run for Senate. This comes on the same day that Sanchez publicly announced his candidacy.

Harden, who has publicly endorsed Wilson, cited redistricting as one reason why Sanchez should step down.

“The Lieutenant Governor’s role is important especially as we do redistricting and we have some big problems in the state that need real focus,” Harden said. “I think if Lieutenant Governor John Sanchez wants to run for the U.S. Senate, he should resign.”

Harden also cited the fact that former governor Bill Richardson ran for president.

“In the previous eight years the executive branch was always running for something else,” Harden said. “New Mexico needs leaders who stay home and take care of business for a change.

Wilson previously ran for Senate in 2008 while she was serving as a congresswoman in the 1st Congressional District.

Unlike a vice president on the national level, the governor does not choose the running mate in New Mexico. The lieutenant governor position on the ticket is filled by primary voters and automatically goes on the ballot under the governor.

Sanchez and Wilson are considered the two top-tier Republican candidates, but businessman Greg Sowards and columnist William S. English have also said they are running for the seat.

On the Democratic side, U.S. Rep. Martin Heinrich, state Auditor Hector Balderas and activist Andres Valdez have all said they are running for the position.
