If the RNC is going to fork out $150,000 for Sarah Palin’s wardrobe, it only seems fair that it should throw a few bucks Heather Wilson’s way. Either that, or somebody has got to tell her that only Outkast and the Joker look good in green suits.

With this election year coming to a close and Heather Wilson conspicuously absent from the ballot, it was nice to see her on Hardball with Chris Matthews — green suit and all.

While retiring Sen. Pete Domenici still holds out hopes for Wilson becoming the next director of the CIA if John McCain wins the election, it seems more plausible that Wilson will simply go down as our state’s biggest political casualty this year.

But after watching her on MSNBC last night, I could not help but think the GOP voters were dumber than a bag of hammers for choosing Steve Pearce over her in the primary. In my opinion, Wilson easily defeated Pearce every time the two debated. She’s intellectually more qualified to be a senator than Pearce, and she’s a much more savvy politician. Most especially, in a year when the GOP has been double-whammied by the abysmal economy and George W. Bush’s unpopularity, Wilson’s moderate political persona would have made the race much more interesting. Her popularity among her Albuquerque constituents would have been a big boost as well. After all, it was John McCain, not Bush, who campaigned for her in 2004 as a candidate who’s “not afraid to buck her own party.”

Heather, we hardly knew ya.

On a separate note, for all the political junkies and poll-a-holics out there, here’s an interesting spotlight on New Mexico.
