Politico’s Ben Smith and Byron Tau write how New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez and Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval have stayed more popular than other Republican governors elected in 2010 like Florida Gov. Rick Scott and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker.
Martinez has a 52-37 favorable rating as of early July, according to Public Policy Polling.
More from Politico:
Martinez, by contrast, was elected as a relative outsider, having served as district attorney for Democratic-leaning Dona Ana County. But soon after her election, she made a point of building relationships with the Democrats who controlled the legislature in a series of private meetings and outreach sessions. Where Scott, for instance, has seen a toxic relationship with even Republicans in his state legislature undermine elements of his agenda, Martinez won her crucial legislative fight, a budget with no new taxes.
“Making sure there’s a constant conversation between a Republican governor and a Democratic legislature is extraordinarily important,” she said.
Her admirers include Democrats.
