Block loses vice-chair post on PRC, still a member despite vote

Jerome Block, Jr.

The Public Regulation Commission voted to remove embattled Commissioner Jerome Block, Jr. from his post as vice chairman of the committee Thursday. The other commissioners all called on him to step down in a Tuesday resolution; however, the PRC does not have the power to remove him. Block was not present at the meeting, and hasn’t been seen in Santa Fe since a series of scandals involving misuse of a state-issued gas card broke last week.

The state House Republican leader sent a letter to Speaker Ben Luján earlier this week asking for the creation of a committee to investigate the charges that could lead to impeachment. Block spent $5,000 in six weeks on a state-issued gas card, drove a state vehicle with a suspended license for 11 months, is a suspect in a stolen-auto case stemming from his borrowing of a vehicle for a test drive, and faces criminal charges over campaign finance violations.
