Post 9/11 veterans on short end of employment stick

With President Obama announcing the withdrawal of troops from Iraq by the end of this year, families will eagerly welcome their loved ones back. But the labor market is tight, particularly for veterans in the post 9/11 era.

In New Mexico, which has enjoyed a below-average unemployment rate compared to the rest of country, veterans are getting the short end of the labor stick.

The most recent jobless figures for The Land of Enchantment is 6.6 percent while veteran figures are much higher—above 14 percent according to 2010 numbers. Another report compiled by the New Mexico Legislature on in January stated the unemployment rate for this cohort of veterans is double the national rate.

Nationally, veterans serving in other conflicts are more successful in maintaining or finding work—currently at 8.1 percent.
