Teague’s chances look good based on early numbers

Things are looking very good for Democratic 2nd Congressional District candidate Harry Teague, but it’s still early.

Teague split Eddy County’s vote with Republican opponent Ed Tinsley 50-50, according to The Associated Press tally. And he’s not trailing Tinsley by a huge margin in Tinsley’s home county — Lincoln — where Tinsley leads 55 percent to 45 percent.

Teague has a 2-point lead in conservative Lea County, where he’s from.

It’s way too early to call this race, but keep in mind that Doña Ana County should be a big win for Teague, and it’s the most populous county in the district. None of the votes from that county have been counted. Tinsley needs to win by a larger margin in some of these other counties than the leads he currently has.

State Republican Party Chairman Allen Weh appeared to acknowledge the uphill battle for Tinsley around 8 p.m. Weh told NMI’s David Alire Garcia that Sheriff Darren White stood a far better chance of winning the Albuquerque-based 1st Congressional District race than Repubilican Ed Tinsley in the 2nd Congressional District.

The overall tally in the 2nd District race is 51 percent for Tinsley to 49 percent for Teague with about 10 percent of the votes counted.
