A twinkle in his eye, guv just won’t say if he’s eyeing a job with Obama

What are Gov. Bill Richardson’s thoughts about purportedly being on the short list for a post in President-elect Barack Obama’s Cabinet?

It’s hard to tell. The guv was uncharacteristically tight-lipped Wednesday. Richardson informed several members of the media that he hadn’t spoken with the big winner since Tuesday night, when U.S. voters changed the prefix to Obama’s name from U.S. Senator to President-elect.

But as for thoughts, emotions, speculation — Richardson wasn’t dishing.

“I’m happy where I am and in continuing my work as governor,” Richardson said, trotting out the standard response that has become the bane of local political reporters’ existence.

Richardson’s non-response didn’t stop the pestering.

But really, governor? What do you think about being mentioned? This time a shrug, accompanied by a coy smile.

Do you have an interview scheduled with the president-elect? Perhaps a flight planned back East, asked an especially persistent scribe?

“I am very happy. I don’t want to comment more. I don’t want to comment anymore,” the governor said, a twinkle in his eye. “Why do you guys keep asking me this?” Richardson said in mock protest.

Members of the media tried a few times more to pry a morsel or two out, but nada.

So I guess the local media will see the movie — Mr. Richardson goes to Washington — the same time as the public. But if you get a preview, let me know.
