The tomato salmonella outbreak isn’t over, but we’re getting closer.
The outbreak was first reported by public health workers in the Navajo Nation, although it didn’t originate in New Mexico. The Las Cruces Sun-News reported over the weekend that the total number of U.S. cases so far is 552, and in New Mexico there have been 78 cases reported in 17 counties.
The FDA has narrowed the source to raw "red plum, red Roma, round red tomatoes, and products containing these raw tomatoes" originating from certain farms in Mexico and Florida. Their website has a detailed list of places from which these types of tomatoes can be bought, plus the other varieties of tomatoes which can be bought and consumed safely.
Following on this news, the New Mexico Environment Department and Department of Health have placed an embargo on the likely culprits, and have issued a warning to the public to not consume any of those three types of tomatoes originating in either Florida or Mexico.
