The Albuquerque City Council last night voted to spend $700,000 to study the possibility of building an 11,000-seat arena downtown next to the railroad tracks. As the Albuquerque Journal reports, Brad Winter and Ken Sanchez were the only two councilors to vote no on the study. The Downtown Action Team and Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Congress had supported the study.
The Council rejected a proposed UNM-area condo project that would have put a four-story building at Gold and Buena Vista, near UNM. KOB.com has video.
Former U.S. Attorney David Iglesias appeared on "The Daily Show" with Jon Stewart last night. The Journal’s Michael Coleman watched it last night and caught what he said was Iglesias’ money line: "I thought I was working for the Jedi Knights and in reality I was working for the Sith Lords." Stewart responded, "For the audience of this show, you couldn’t have used a better example."
In Santa Fe, emergency water restrictions that allow Eldorado residents to water outdoors only one day a week will last through October, according to the Office of the State Engineer. But as David Collins of the Santa Fe New Mexican , there is some confusion and controversy over the cause and implementation of the restrictions.
In Carlsbad, the entire town of White’s City will be auctioned off next month. The settlement, which is right next to the popular tourist attraction of Carlsbad Caverns, includes an RV park, campground, restaurants, post office, museum, gas station, shops and an indoor water park. In national news, a new Washington Post/ABC News poll , the first since Obama emerged victorious from the Democratic primary contests, finds Obama leading McCain 49 to 45 percent among registered voters — but they are tied for the favor of independent voters, indicating Obama has lost ground among independents recently. Still, twice as many people said they had a "strongly favorable" impression of Obama versus McCain.
