Bingaman opposes House budget because of border security cuts

U.S. Sen. Jeff Bingaman signed onto a letter with Sens. Jon Tester, D-Mont., and Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., announcing opposition to the budget bill passed by the House because of large cuts to border security that would cut 870 Border Patrol agents and $272 million in funds for surveillance systems along the United States’ border with Mexico.

Sarah Palin may be a weak candidate in a general election in New Mexico, but she would receive significant support in the primary, according to a poll by Public Policy Polling. The survey also shows that though former Gov. Poll shows Bingaman a ‘near lock’ for re-election

Sen. Jeff Bingaman, who has not yet announced his decision on whether to run for re-election, leads major potential Republican candidates in a poll released by the Democratic polling firm Public Policy Polling. PPP showed that Bingaman had an extremely high approval rating: 56 percent approved of his job performance while just 27 percent disapproved, the fourth highest among senators polled in the last year by PPP.

Pearce, LULAC at odds over alleged comment about birthright citizenship

The League of United Latin American Citizens is denying a claim by U.S. Rep. Steve Pearce, R-N.M., that its members supported repealing birthright citizenship. Some Republicans have supported a law that would end giving citizenship to those born on United States soil unless the parents are citizens or permanent legal residents.

Albuquerque city councilor Dan Lewis announced this weekend that he is forming a congressional exploratory committee to potentially challenge Democratic incumbent Martin Heinrich in 2012. The release says that the Republican is “seriously considering” a run at the 1st Congressional District seat held by Heinrich since 2008.

Sen. Tom Udall, along with Sens. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) and Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), introduced a resolution to change the filibuster in the U.S. Senate yesterday. A vote on the rules change was put on hold until the Senate returns from a recess after the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday.
