While much of the attention was on the presidential election during the past few months, all political eyes are now on Minnesota, Alaska and Georgia’s U.S. Senate races. Alaska and Minnesota are still counting ballots, while Georgia is readying itself for a special election next month. Here in New Mexico, there was not as much drama in the race for Senate or even, ultimately, any of the open House seats.
Politico has a list of 25 key counties to watch for the presidential election. And two New Mexico counties are near the top of the list. Here they are, according to Politico:

A recently linked “death list” of U.S. House races shows that the Republican Party is not very optimistic about limiting losses to seats in the House in November’s elections.

Democratic congressional candidate Ben Ray Luján raised another $380,000 in the third fundraising quarter of 2008, according to a press release from the campaign.
According to the release, Lujan has raised nearly $1.4 million for the campaign total and $530,000 for the general election.

The two competitive New Mexico congressional districts are clearly a priority to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. The DCCC has put in just under $175,000 in the 1st Congressional District and just under $205,000 in CD2 in filings with Tuesday’s date.
In other words, the DCCC just dropped $380,000 in the two key races.
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) pushed another $146,355.48 into the 2nd Congressional District on Tuesday. The spending is to support Democrat Harry Teague and to oppose Republican Ed Tinsley.
The spending, according to FEC filings, pushes the total spending in the district to $240,755.62.
