Sarah Palin may be a weak candidate in a general election in New Mexico, but she would receive significant support in the primary, according to a poll by Public Policy Polling. The survey also shows that though former Gov. Gary Johnson would be the strongest Republican candidate against President Barack Obama in New Mexico, he would be tied for fourth place in a Republican primary.

According to a survey by a Democratic polling firm, President Barack Obama starts off in strong position to win New Mexico in 2012 as he did in 2008. The Public Policy Polling poll shows that Obama has a large lead over the potential Republican presidential candidates polled. The poll also shows that the strongest Republican challenger is former New Mexico governor Gary Johnson.

Sen. Jeff Bingaman, who has not yet announced his decision on whether to run for re-election, leads major potential Republican candidates in a poll released by the Democratic polling firm Public Policy Polling. PPP showed that Bingaman had an extremely high approval rating: 56 percent approved of his job performance while just 27 percent disapproved, the fourth highest among senators polled in the last year by PPP.

Gary Johnson admits to recently smoking marijuana

Former New Mexico governor Gary Johnson, a tea party favorite and possible 2012 Republican presidential candidate, told The Weekly Standard that he smoked marijuana for medicinal purposes from 2005 to 2008 following a paragliding accident in Hawaii. Johnson has long advocated from legalizing marijuana but has said in the past that he supports it despite no longer smoking marijuana (or drinking alcohol) himself.
