Reps. Ben Ray Luján (D-NM) and Steve Pearce (R-NM) voted against the House resolution authorizing the use of force in Libya, while Rep. Martin Heinrich (D-NM) voted in favor of it as the resolution failed in the House 123-295. 70 Democrats joined 115 Republicans in voting down the measure, supported by eight Republicans and 115 Democrats.

Under the proposal creating a State Ethics Commission a person filing a complaint and then going public could face a $26,000 fine and a year in jail. A public official, on the other hand, found to have violated the public trust would face a censure or public reprimand. The House voted 49 to 15 to pass an ethics commission bill after a relatively short debate in which Democrats swatted away several amendments from Republicans to strengthen the bill.

A half-cent hike in the state gross receipts tax and a 1-percent surtax on the state’s wealthiest residents are in the mixture of tax increases and targeted closure of tax deductions and loopholes. House Speaker Ben Lujan, D-Santa Fe, said Thursday afternoon he thinks he has the votes to push through the tax package.
