There’s lots going on in the blogosphere today, but much of it has to do with Albuquerque Mayor-elect Richard Berry and the fallout from him resigning his legislative seat days before the special session begins.

Here’s a sampling:

• Ched Macquigg comments on why he thinks the Bernalillo County Commission “might ignore the will of the people” in deciding who will replace Berry. This blogger discusses how political party affiliation is causing debate over the filling of Berry’s legislative seat.

• Democracy for New Mexico posts a blog regarding Democrat — and AFSCME political director — Josh Anderson’s desire to fill this newly-vacant position. The Bernalillo County Commission may be voting on this issue as early as tonight.

On to other topics:

• Jim Baca discusses what he sees as irony regarding dynamics in the state Legislature – particularly that conservatives still seem to be calling the shots in the Senate.

• Marjorie of M-Pyre (and the Independent) blogs about a recent article from Forbes that says markets aren’t everything. Her read on the article: “Isn’t this another way of saying that capitalism has to be mitigated through the government or other social(ist) formations?”

• Last, Mario Burgos explains why “political promises never last” in the context of the current debate over health-care reform.

Last week Gov. Bill Ricardson and U.S. Sen. Tom Udall announced that they’re applying for funds to study the feasibility of creating a high-speed rail line from El Paso to Denver, through Albuquerque. SFReeper.com has an interesting post about two other high-speed rail plans for America.

Essentially, the Obama administration’s proposal leaves out New Mexico, Colorado and West Texas completely. The U.S. High Speed Rail Association’s plan would connect Albuquerque to Denver but leave out Southern New Mexico and West Texas.

The Reeper’s post makes a good point: Two hours from Albuquerque to Denver? Cool…

In other blog news, the Rio Grande Foundation’s Jim Scarantino is out with Part 3 in his investigative reporting on the state’s $9 million investment in Earthstone, and is up with a posting about it at New Mexico Liberty.

As the GOP is airing a TV ad attacking Lt. Gov. Diane Denish, former Albuquerque Mayor Jim Baca warned Dems over the weekend of what may be in store for them on his blog.

Republican Jon Barela is using a “Taxpayer Protection Pledge” to try to gain support for his bid to unseat Democratic Rep. Martin Heinrich, according to Peter St. Cyr’s blog.

But it’s summer, so let’s also talk about some more summer-ish things. Check out this Duke City Fix blog by Barelas Babe about her recent trip to Tingley Beach. It might give you enough reason to get away from this computer and get out into the fresh air of New Mexico.

Oh yeah, and the new Harry Potter movie opens at midnight. m-pyre’s Mikaela has the goods on that.

NMI’s Danielle Bauer contributed to this report.

I want to start today with news about local “tea parties” coming to New Mexico. Paul Gessing, writing on New Mexico Liberty, has the info on the upcoming Albuquerque Tea Party and says a Santa Fe event is also in the works. These are gatherings being organized across the nation to protest wasteful spending and the nation’s economic direction.

Also on the economic front, NMI’s Marjorie Childress writes on her own blog, m-pyre, about “corporate blackmail.” She decries government acting “as an arm of big corporations” and uses the situation with SunCal and the Legislature as an example.

SunCal doesn’t need government funding to build its Albuquerque development, Childress writes, so the plan is “corporate blackmail, pure and simple — Sun Cal says they’ll simply build sprawling housing tracts otherwise, with big box stores. And as ever, our very weak government is going to fall for it.”

Meanwhile, New Mexico State University government professor Jose Z. Garcia has a posting on his blog about Ciudad Juarez’s essentially being under martial law.

And SFReeper.com has the goods on the possibility that Thornburg Mortgage is about to file for bankruptcy.

Such times.
