President Barack Obama, dogged by persistent rumors he is a Muslim, explained why he is a Christian during an hour-long discussion with residents in an Albuquerque front yard Tuesday.

“I’m a Christian by choice,” the president said. “I came to my Christian faith later in life. And it was because the precepts of Jesus Christ spoke to me in terms of the kind of life that I would want to lead: being my brothers’ and sisters’ keeper, treating others as they would treat me.”

In 2009, the Knights of Columbus donated $1.4 million to the National Organization for Marriage (NOM), a nonprofit group dedicated to fighting same-sex marriage through the ballot initiative system in California, Maine and other states. That’s nearly half of the total charitable contributions to the anti-gay-marriage group, and it’s more than the Knights spent on some of its own programs, including food banks or education initiatives.
