If the RNC is going to fork out $150,000 for Sarah Palin’s wardrobe, it only seems fair that it should throw a few bucks Heather Wilson’s way. Either that, or somebody has got to tell her that…

Prying for public records can cost a pretty penny

By | 10.23.08 | 3:37 pm

Watchdogs of the public’s information often find themselves in an uncomfortable quandary. What’s the information’s value to the public vs. its cost to get it? In Alaska, those quandaries have now reached staggering levels — $15 million. Could it happen here?

By | 10.23.08 | 4:00 am

Our quadrennial exercise in democracy has once again come down to this predictable predictor: sales of Halloween masks. John McCain or Barack Obama? Can $10 worth of latex foretell the victor?

In Las Cruces, sales of Barack Obama and…

Prez race hinges on southern N.M.

By | 10.21.08 | 2:00 pm

It appears that Barack Obama and John McCain believe New Mexico’s five electoral votes hinge on what happens in the southern region of the state on Nov. 4. The move appears to parallel a move nationally by Obama as he goes on the offensive in traditionally conservative areas to put McCain on the defensive.

It doesn’t look like McCain is giving up on N.M., regardless of what CNN says

By | 10.21.08 | 9:53 am

Is John McCain giving up on New Mexico? That’s what CNN’s John King is reporting, but there are lots of signs that McCain is still working hard to win the state’s five electoral votes, including a possible Saturday…

Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin broke little new ground during her rally in Roswell on Sunday, but that wasn’t her goal: She made a quick trip to the “Little Texas” corner of the state to rally conservative base voters. And rally the GOP base she did.

Prez debate fact check guide: This one or ‘that one,’ they both lie

By | 10.15.08 | 6:05 pm

The nonpartisan truth factory known as Factcheck.org is as good a place as any to get your Wednesday night debate-watching detectors in gear. (It’s also a decent tool for setting some ground rules for a debate-watching drinking game, but the New Mexico Independent isn’t outright endorsing such potentially irresponsible behavior.)

Let’s talk about ‘verbal terrorism’

By | 10.14.08 | 1:11 pm

Left-wing verbal terrorists like Congressman John Lewis should be held up to ridicule. They shouldn’t be taken seriously, as the ignorant, history-deprived media talking heads take them.

Don’t be resigned. Push back against racism

By | 10.13.08 | 9:07 am

Three more weeks. As with most Americans I figure, the economic news is weighing heavily on my mind when I consider the presidential race. All I really want to do is study this situation, which seems decidedly non-partisan to me. Rather, it’s a failure of capitalism which is as non-partisan as you can get. If only I could focus. But I can’t. Instead I’m thinking about race in America. As in, Race.

She’s eternally young, wears a thousand hats and is kind of … plastic. But put 49-year-old Barbie on the campaign trail, and you just might have a winner. At least that’s the thought at Albuquerque’s Off Center Art Gallery. Under the direction of volunteer and abstract acrylic artist Barbara King, the gallery has unveiled its “Election Year Barbie” exhibit, an array of collages, paintings and one deliciously melted knock-off Barbie that puts America’s favorite icon into her political place.
