Senate wrangles over whether to consider tax bills

Despite Gov. Bill Richardson’s very clear message that tax increases aren’t part of the Legislature’s business during the special session, several senators filed such bills Saturday. They will face their first obstacle when the Senate’s Committee on Committees hears those bills at meeting scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday. This particular Senate panel determines what legislation is germane, or relevant, to the Legislature’s business during the special session. Their guide: the governor’s proclamation.

Budget crisis requires health care reform, advocates say

Health care reform would seem to have fallen off the political map in New Mexico. Gov. Bill Richardson has barely mentioned the subject since he called a special session of the Legislature in the summer of 2007 to ostensibly consider reform. Now legislators face the prospect of opening their 2009 session next month with a projected budget shortfall of $400 million this year, as well as next fiscal year.
