Martinez extends state food stamp benefits

Gov. Susana Martinez announced Monday that she will extend a state program to supplement federal food stamp benefits for 4,000 low-income elderly and disabled New Mexicans, the AP reports. The program was set to expire on July 1, as the Legislature did not appropriate money for it.

Martinez announced that she does “not intend to make an endorsement in the Republican primary at this time.” Martinez has ties to both top-tier Republican candidates. John Sanchez, who made it official that he is running for Senate today, is her lieutenant governor. Heather Wilson headed Martinez’s transition team.

Gov. Susana Martinez’s new leadership political action committee, Susana PAC, uses issues such as drivers licenses for illegal immigrants and voter ID laws to fundraise. The letter, obtained by blogger Joe Monahan, asks for donations from between $25 and $1000 to the PAC dedicated to electing politicians with similar political stances as the governor.

The state’s largest school district will see a $22 million budget cut in the upcoming fiscal year, and more than 70 percent of the money designated for salaries will go to teachers and educational assistants, according to the Albuquerque Journal. The budget for Albuquerque Public Schools will be $594 million after a 3.3 percent cut from the legislature.

Newly named redistricting panel faces travel cuts, fewer public hearings

New Mexico legislators took a step toward the once-a-decade process of redistricting by naming an 18-member committee to begin the hard work of redistricting. The committee will not only reset the lines for the state’s three congressional districts but also for each of the state House and state Senate districts. But the lawmakers face a challenge: Cuts that could mean fewer public hearings on the new district lines.

Lawmakers are worried, however, that they may not be able to get as much public input because Gov. Susana Martinez line-item-vetoed $100,000 in funding for the redistricting committee’s expenses.
