Udall, Bingaman bill would create UNM cavernous angioma research center

U.S. senators Tom Udall and Jeff Bingaman introduced a bill in Congress to create a “Center of Excellence” research program at the University of New Mexico (UNM) for cavernous angioma.
Cavernous angioma is a rare, genetic brain disease that disproportionately affects New Mexicans whose ancestors arrived from Mexico and Spain more than 200 years ago.

Udall introduces bill to end dependence on foreign oil

Sen. Tom Udall, D-N.M., and two other Senators introduced a bill designed to “achieve American oil independence” by 2030. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, a majority of the oil consumed in the United States comes from foreign sources.

Federal appeals court gives go ahead to uranium mining in Churchrock

Uranium mining in Churchrock advanced last week as an appeals court cleared the way for Hydro Resources to start in-situ leaching in Northwest New Mexico. But residents and environmentalists worry that the mining will contaminate water. Because of the ongoing issue of abandoned mines that haven’t been cleaned up and a legacy of illness caused by exposure in the mines, the Navajo Nation banned uranium mining of all types in 2005.


Amendment to bar EPA from regulating greenhouse gases fails

A resolution that would have barred the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from regulating greenhouse gases failed today in the U.S. Senate on a 53-47 vote. Six Democrats voted for the resolution that would have almost certainly forced a veto from President Barack Obama.


Border security concerns shrink Organ Mountains wilderness area

U.S. Park Service may take over Valles Caldera preserve

Northern New Mexico’s Valles Caldera could become a national park if a bill introduced Thursday by Senators Jeff Bingaman and Tom Udall is successful. The Park Service has already completed a study determining that the Caldera meets National Park criteria. Hunting, fishing and cattle grazing would still be allowed under the bill.
