Attempting to capitalize on a campaign gaffe by presidential candidate John McCain, Planned Parenthood is airing an ad that touches on McCain being unable to respond to a question about why Viagra is covered by many health care providers but birth control is not. Included in the states where the ad will air is New Mexico.

McCain was caught on camera struggling to answer a question from a reporter about the birth control issue. The issue was originally brought up last week by a McCain surrogate, adviser Carly Fiorina, who noted that some insurance companies insure Viagra but not birth control.

The comment raised eyebrows among many, including among women bloggers. At BlogHer, a community of woman-bloggers, Jennifer Parker wrote that Fiorina’s comment was "a curious statement from one of McCain’s top surrogates, considering the Arizona Republican has voted twice against mandating insurance companies to provide coverage for birth control, once in 2003 and again in 2005."

Planned Parenthood is attempting to capitalize on this, as the New York Times reports:

Planned Parenthood said the ad is being aimed at women voters, and will be broadcast during the season premiere of “Project Runway,” on Bravo, Lifetime’s “Army Wives,” and “The Oprah Winfrey Show” in some markets. It will air in battleground states, including Colorado, Iowa, Minnesota, New Mexico, Ohio, and Wisconsin, as well as in the Washington, D.C., area.

The Planned Parenthood Action Fund endorsed Barack Obama earlier this month. Obama is just the second presidential candidate the Planned Parenthood Action Fund has ever endorsed. According to the group’s ratings, Obama received a 100 percent rating, while McCain received a zero percent.
