Gov. Bill Richardson will travel to Mexico City on Thursday to participate in a wide-ranging discussion between governors of U.S. border states and their Mexican counterparts, the governor's office announced Wednesday.
The governors from both sides of the border also will meet with Mexican President Calderón Hinojosa, and his cabinet secretaries, to discuss border security and immigration, mutual response to natural disasters, compliance with international agreements and treaties governing bi-national watersheds, fostering border competitiveness, and creating a renewable energy infrastructure fund.
The meeting takes place as violence is escalating along the border due to Mexico's crackdown on the drug cartels.
