Guv: Obama will win NM ... narrowly
Bill Richardson says Obama will win New Mexico, but it'll be by a narrow margin.
At a press conference today to highlight the endorsement of Obama by the League of Conservation Voters, Richardson said "My view is that Sen. Obama can carry New Mexico. He will do so narrowly," the Associated Press reports.
Why narrowly?
Richardson continued, "I'm realistic. New Mexico is one of the battleground states."
He said Obama would win northern New Mexico and the Albuquerque area easily but split the southern areas of the state with McCain. Nonetheless, even that 2nd Congressional District could go to Obama, he believes, but it'll be "tough" and rely on Dona Ana, Valencia and Grant counties.
The AP report pointed out how close the previous two presidential elections had been, with Bush beating Kerry by 5,988 votes in 2004, and Gore winning the state in 2000 by just 366 votes. In reply to how close it could be this fall in light of those numbers, the governor laughed as he said "We'll take a victory by one vote."
At the same time, he said he'd be campaigning "extensively" for Obama across the country.
