Congressman Tom Davis (R-VA) suggested this morning that Heather Wilson might make an excellent running mate for Republican nominee John McCain—especially if Obama does not choose Clinton as his running mate. Davis made the comments earlier today at a press breakfast sponsored by the Christian Science Monitor. Davis said McCain should also consider Bobby Jindal, the Indian-American governor of Louisiana, citing his young age and saying that his East Indian heritage "doesn’t turn off anyone in particular," according to a Wall Street Journal reporter who blogged about the event today.

Davis speculated that choosing a female running mate would be a strategic move, helping to balance the ticket and broaden McCain’s appeal. He suggested Texas Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison as well as Wilson.

According to Davis spokesman Brian McNicoll, GOP Rep. Tom Davis believes Wilson would benefit the Republican campaign with "a fresh face, a different twist, a different voice."

Davis is retiring this year and has been quite outspoken about the steps his party will need to prevail in November. Earlier this month, he read the riot act to House Republican leadership in a closed-door session, then told reporters.  

"The Republican brand is in the trash can…if we were dog food, they would take us off the shelf."
