Hola, Mexico

More direct flights possible from NM

By Denise Tessier 05/08/2008

The governor is on a roll. A day after securing daily Aeromexico flights from Albuquerque to Chihuahua City, he's now promising to do whatever he can to get direct flights to the Mexican cities of Hermosillo and Puerto Peñasco as well.

Richardson signed two memorandums of understanding Thursday with Eduardo Bours Castelo, the governor of the border state of Sonora, during an official visit to the Sonoran city of Hermosillo, according to a press release issued this afternoon. One MOU focuses on strengthening economic, tourism and security ties between the Sonoran state and New Mexico, while the other promises cooperation in establishing flights to Sonora.

The MOU regarding airline flights points out the allure of Hermosillo, which is directly south of Nogales, and Pacific coast cities to the west:

Whereas: Sonora is endowed with many tourist attractions such as the beaches of Puerto Peñasco (Rocky Point), San Carlos, Nuevo Guaymas and the Bay of Kino, as well as places that vividly sustain the tradition and heritage of the Sonoran culture that make Sonora a destination of interest for New Mexican tourists;

NOW, THEREFORE, in accordance with the above recitals, the Government of the State of New Mexico and the Government of the State of Sonora are hereby committed to carry out, to the extent of their respective abilities, the necessary measures to establish a commercial flight between the cities of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Puerto Peñasco and Hermosillo, Sonora.

New Mexico shares with Sonora state a portion of the international border between Mexico and the United States; most of Sonora lies directly south of Arizona.

More information about the latest Mexican agreements should be posted shortly on the governor's home page.
