The Cook Political Report upgraded 10 races to ratings more favorable to Democrats today. Included was New Mexico’s 2nd Congressional District.

The Cook Political Report moved the 2nd Congressional District to "Lean Republican" from "Likely Republican."

“We are changing our race ratings in ten districts where we believe Democratic chances of taking Republican-held seats have increased," the Cook Political Report wrote. "With these changes, the GOP occupies 21 of the 27 seats now listed in the Toss Up column.”

Democrat Harry Teague will face Republican Ed Tinsley in November’s general election. Both won their respective party’s nomination on Tuesday. The district voted for George Bush by a 16.4 percent margin in the 2004 elections and is very conservative. The seat is open because U.S. Rep. Steve Pearce is running for the open Senate seat. Pearce won Tuesday’s primary by a narrow margin over Albuquerque Republican Heather Wilson.

Eric Kleefeld of Talking Points Memo wrote, "It’s very rare that Cook flips so many ratings at once — much less flipping them all in favor of the same political party."

The Cook Political Report lists the 1st Congressional District as a "toss-up" and does not list the 3rd Congressional District race as competitive. The May 22 Senate rankings listed New Mexico as a toss-up.
