Teague gets some help

By Matthew Reichbach 06/18/2008

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) has upped the ante in its bid to make New Mexico a Democratic-controlled state.

Last week, the DCCC announced the addition of Martin Heinrich to its "Red to Blue" fundraising list. Today, the DCCC announced the addition of Harry Teague to the same fundraising list. Heinrich was announced on this list again despite the DCCC previously publicizing his involvement in the program.

Teague is running for Congress in the 2nd Congressional District, while Heinrich is running in the 1st Congressional District.

"The candidates for change being named to the DCCC Red to Blue program are running strong campaigns and are committed to making things easier for middle-class families in their districts," Chris Van Hollen, the DCCC chairman, said in the announcement. Noting that there are fewer than five months remaining for the two men to make their cases for change, he said, "the Red to Blue program will give these candidates the financial and structural edge to be even more competitive in November."

"With deep roots in Southern New Mexico, Harry Teague understands the economic challenges facing our families. As a businessman and community leader, Harry created thousands of jobs and worked across party lines to promote economic development," said Sen. Jeff Bingaman in a press release from the Teague campaign. "The Red to Blue Program will give Harry's campaign for change the financial and structural edge to be even more competitive."

Despite electing a Republican for decades, the 2nd District has more registered Democrats than Republicans. And in a sign of Teague's chances, the  Cook Political Report recently changed the race status to "lean Republican" from "likely Republican."

The Republican National Campaign Committee has a program called Our Team, but no candidates from New Mexico are included in the program.

Teague will face Ed Tinsley in the general election, while Heinrich will face Darren White.
